High tech component shortage looms

Experts are warning that the high tech industry is confronting a critical shortage of semiconductors and other components needed to sustain manufacturing lines around the world.

The overall chip shortage come on the heels of a similar shortage of DRAMS, the main memory chips used in PCs and mobile phones. The shortage could mean a severe shortfall of things like smart phones and PCs during the year-end selling season.

According to iSuppli, DRAM makers face two supply problems currently, an inability to obtain needed production equipment and tricky work implementing advanced new technology, market expert iSuppli noted.

The shortage has been blamed on chip makers'  failure to invest new manufacturing facilities during the recession.
