Entrepreneurship, startups and innovators who bring new technology - and new jobs - to global markets around the world are suffering from a decline in critical funding sources.
The number of people starting businesses declined 10 percent in the wealthiest nations during the global economic slowdown, according to this GEM 2009 Entrepreneurship Monitor report which examines entrepreneurship in 54 countries.
But despite the stark conclusions, the overall picture for startups and entrepreneurship is not as sharply defined.
For instance, the GEM Report found wide country-to-country variations among the wealthiest nations, with nine countries showing declines in new startup activity, four showing increases and five with no change.
The study of 54 countries is based on more than 180,000 detailed interviews with working age adults.
